Webspace is what it says on the box - space for your website.

The types of webspace are varied though.  The first type you'll come across is the free space that you should get with your ISP (if you didn't get any then change your ISP pronto).

This could range from 5mb (the bare minimum) through to 10mb (sufficient for a home page).  Some ISP's are more generous and will give you from 50mb's up to 100mb's.  Ideal for a larger site with plenty of images.

Webamaze - Web design for you There are two drawbacks with free space.  One is that some ISP's will not allow you to have a business related website.  The other is that you will not have a nice site address.  Instead of being www.mysite.co.uk it will look something like this: http://www.freespace/webspace/files/username/index/

You will also find that you may not be able to have counters, message boards, forms or downloadable files with your free space.

The next type of space is dedicated or hosted webspace.  This is the kind of space that you have to pay for.

You can pay anything from a few pounds to hundreds of pounds per year depending on how much space you want.  You are free to do what you want with a hosted site (as long as you keep to the hosts regulations).

You can do all that you can't with free space and more.  You can use databases, run a business, have as many email addresses as you wish and have secure money transfer facilities (if supported).

Webamaze - Web design for you The ideal solution is to buy the webspace from the same place that you bought your domain name.  This will keep costs down to a minimum because you will not need to face any transfer charges.

There is also the kind of space that you can get with MSN and Yahoo.  These can be ignored because you have to update them online, use their templates and their extras.

They also come with pop-ups galore and are downright irritating.
